Whispered voices drift on the slow agonizing breeze. The salty, metallic taste of blood filled my mouth and I struggled to swallow it all. A threatening figure loomed over me and a huge hand tangled in my crimson hair and yanked me up. I couldn’t stand though. I staggered into the figure but it shoved me hard away. I fell forward, face splashing in my own blood. The breath was knocked from me as a strong leg struck my stomach. I grimaced in pain as I heard a sickening crack, another broken rib. I was waiting for death, urging it on. But death was being stubborn. This was displeasing. I began coughing and I threw up yet another puddle of ruby fluids. Fingers tangled in my hair again and I whimpered as I was pulled to my feet. Blood covered my face from the ground but that didn’t stop my torturer from kissing me. His lips came down on mine hard and there was no way I could struggle. His tongue lapped at the blood on my lips slowly. It was ages before he said anything.
“Not dead yet, Brittany?” his hot breath washed over my face and I whimpered yet again.
“That’s to bad, you know. I like you so much better when your dead. You’re a lot quieter.” He sneered and he twisted my hair in a knot, pulling some of it out. I gave a faint little cry, but it was useless. If anyone was around at all, they wouldn’t help me.
“Don’t cry, Britt. You might attract attention to yourself. Not that it matters. No one’s going to save you know.” He silenced my breathless cry with his toxic lips. I used to adore those lips. He pushed me back again when he was done. I fell to the ground hard, on my spine this time. I just lay there, waiting for him to finish me off. Another kick came and I had no energy left to scream anymore. I was so close. Part of me, deep down, wanted to live. The other part wanted it to end. Not just the torture, but my life. I wanted it all to be finished. He continued though. He yanked me up, but this time he drove a knife into my stomach. I could barely feel the pain. I was able to whisper a few words.
“Come to me death.” I sighed out my last breath, but before me soul faded, I heard my tormentor say triumphantly.
“Finally! I’ll see you on the other side Britt.” Then I knew nothing but air and the sound of rushing water.
I’m drifting. Slowly through darkness. There is nothing around me, yet I feel trapped and concealed. I think back to the last moments of my life, my tormentors voice tang forever in my head. What did he mean by, “See you on the other side Britt.”? I pondered on this for a while. Did he mean that he would join me here? After he killed me. Images of my life before death flashed in the
Darkness around me. An image of my first meeting with my tormentor, who’s name had been Cole…
“Oh, jeez Becca! Just go ask him out.” I was getting irritated. My best friend, Rebecca Smith, hovered behind me so her crush, Danny Lavan’a, wouldn’t see her.
“In a grocery store! God Britt, your so lame.” She said in a shrill voice. I knew she didn’t mean her words
“You’ve been crushing on him since, like, preschool. If you wont ask him out here, then can we get my mountain dew and leave.” I stepped to the side so I was no longer hiding her and I made my way to the cash register to buy my caffeine. Rebecca tripped after me trying to act calm and normal. I set my bottle on the counter and started to mess in my purse for some cash.
“That’ll be $2.83, please.” A deep voice caught my attention, and as I pulled out a five, I looked up at the cashier. He was indescribably handsome. His deep sapphire blue eyes specked with gold and silver, caught my eyes and held them. Beneath his cashier uniform he had on a skin tight long sleeved t-shirt that sculpted his nice tan body wondrously. And his hair, messy black with electric blue highlights, skater boy style. He gave me a dazzling smile, flipping his hair in an expert way out of his eyes. He was glorious. Rebecca was complaining about something but I was to distracted to listen. I forced myself to hand the guy my five and as he cashed it in, I glimpsed at his name badge. It read Cole in cursive. Simple and sexy.
“Your change.” He held out my money and I took it and shoved it in my purse. “Bag or no?” he asked, flashing another smile.
“Um… No thanks… Cole.” There, I said his name. His eyes sparkled with a mix of Gold, Silver, and blue. An everlasting flame.
“No problem, Brittany.” He said my name like it meant something. How did he know my name? I didn’t have time to ask because Becca yanked on my arm and we left, without my mountain dew.
The image disappeared suddenly and I was back in eternal darkness. Could I do that again? Possibly relive certain memory’s? I tried to think of one but my empty mind had no power what so ever. Then a brought light burst in front of me and I struggled to turn away while suspended in the air by nothing. I found I couldn’t move anywhere but forward and the light only kept getting brighter. The light glared continuously for another second before it was completely black again. my eyes hurt for some reason. Then a strange, flat voice drifted toward me and I strained my eyes on the figure, trying to make out the body out line. It was definitely human. A big gray shadow against pitch black darkness. Then, the shadow spoke clearly.
“Brittany Rottollo, I’ve come to take your soul back to earth.” The shadow moved to me but I still couldn’t make out the figure.
“Who are you?” I suddenly found my voice and I stuttered out the only lame words my energy less mind would allow to produce.
“My name is Jim Hawthorn.” The shadow figure spoke clearly and calmly. Hawthorn. Why did that name seem so familiar. I didn’t have time to think about that. The figure had become transparent now and I could make out simple features. I wanted to scream now but there was no air here to suck in to scream. The figure just happened to be Cole Hawthorn. My killer, and the love of my life. Well, was the love of my life.
“Cole.” I gave a terrified whimper and the shadow Cole shook his head.
“His brother he never talks about.” The shadow sighed, giving me a reassuring unfamiliar half smile. He was telling the truth.
“Cole… has a brother…” I could barely finish my sentence.
“Look, Brittany, I understand what Cole did to you but we have to get you back to earth.” Jim was glancing around the darkness impatiently.
“How can I return? Will I be a ghost?” I asked, confused. He smiled again and laughed.
Yes, until we can find you a proper body to use.” Jim explained. I was totally lost but I didn’t have time to protest before Jim grabbed my hands and with on sharp pull, I was being hurtled through bright pure light.
I was back on earth. I don’t know how it happened, but I was back on earth. Just not how I used to be. My body was just a whitish gray figure, but I was still me. Jim told me that only him and Cole could see me. As soon as he said Cole, I about flipped.
“Do you ever talk to C-Cole?” I stuttered out his name, afraid he would be lurking near by and he would hear me.
“No, we live in totally different houses. Now, my goal is to get you into another body so you can have a new life.” Jim took my hand and started leading me among dark trees.
“What if Cole finds out about this?” I asked suddenly terrified at my imagination. I envisioned Cole killing me again and then turning around to kill Jim to clean up the witnesses. He was that brutal.
“He wont. Once I get you into another body, you’ll be safe from Cole discovering you. Just do me a favor and don’t talk with him, in case he does recognize you.” Jim muttered quickly, then he stopped when we reached a small park. I recognized the park. Just beyond it, a half mile into the trees is where Cole killed me. Jim stopped just on the border line and his gaze swepped the area. The, obviously, he found what he was looking for. He lead me over to an unconscious girl about our age. She was passed out on a swing, just swaying there, on the verge of falling face first into mud. With her eyes shut and her platinum blond hair, she looked asleep. Except I noticed more. Her small body shook slightly, and not just because of the wind. Her breathing was coming in short shallow gasps and sweat dripped down her pale chalky skin. Then I knew what was wrong. She was dying, and Jim had brought me here so I could have her body as she left. I looked up at Jim who was gazing solemnly at the girl. This was hard for him too. We waited in silence, hoping that this would end soon so that the girls soul wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. Come what may. After a few more heart crushing moments, the girl let out one last sigh. I watched her lips part and a wisp of light transparent blue escaped her. Hopefully she wouldn’t be going were I went. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Jim tugged on my arm to get my attention and I looked up at him for guidance.
“This is it, Britt. Now, this is going to sound weird and totally awkward, but to transfer yourself into this body… you have to kiss her.” Jim explained softly, feeling embarrassed.
“Have you done this before?” I looked up at him with a teasing smile. He chuckled but shook his head. I sighed and looked back at the dead girl. She looked peaceful now. I leaned forward slowly, and as I closed my eyes and pressed my lips to hers, I felt a sharp pull and then I knew no more.
“Brittany! Can you hear me?” a deep voice sliced through my dreaming and I groaned. I was myself again. This realization made me jolt up right and my head smacked into something.
“Oww!” the voice exclaimed loudly. Or someone. My eyes fluttered open and it took them a while to adjust. When they finally did, they focused on a face with a bloody nose. My first instinction was to scream. I knew this face. All to well. Then I noticed that unfamiliar half smile and the name Jim popped into my newly refreshed brain. With one hand, Jim helped me up from the ground, which I had been laying on.
“How are you feeling?” Jim asked, sounding funny because of his hand over his bloody nose.
“More than great, Jim. I fell like myself yet brand new.” I smiled warmly and then, all of a sudden, I pressed my new lips to Jim’s semi bloody ones. I was so caught up in the moment. I pulled back sharply when I realized what I had done, but only to see Jim gazing at me warmly, his bloody nose forgotten.
“Sorry.” I whispered, looking down at my bare feet so I wouldn’t have to look at Jim’s face.
“No need to be, Britt. You did what your body naturally does.” Jim smiled and laughed, taking a tissue and wiping his bloody nose though it kept bleeding.
“Oh…” I said softly, breaking off. I didn’t know what to do know. Jim noticed my lost expression and it made him laugh again.
“Go, Britt! Go create a new life!” Jim was laughing as he gave me a gentle shove forward, toward town. I knew what he meant. He had to leave me. I sighed and nodded. Jim gave me a quick hug before turning to leave. I just had one more thing to say.
“Jim.” I called him back and he turned, ready to listen. “I knew it was a mistake the moment it was over.” I said confidently. He smiled , knowing exactly what I meant. He turned but before he started walking again, he threw a few quick words over his shoulder.
“Don’t make that mistake again, Britt. I’ll see you.” Then he was gone. He literally just vanished into thin air. I didn’t even bother to ponder. Jim was special. I just hoped I got to see him again.
