Kovu smiled to himself at her response, but his ears flattened when she turned away from him. Had I scared her? You stupid furball! He badgered himself angrily. Shaking his head he lay down, letting a yawn slip out of his mouth. Kovu felt a wave of energy for some reason... Probably because he was normally awake at night. He glanced down at Maplefur, all curled up in a ball. It made her look even smaller and more vulnerable than she did normally, and he felt an urge to protect her.
The tom glanced around and laid a few mouse-tails away from Maplefur, keeping a protective eye over her at all times. Then he realized she might feel awkward and murmured, "Don't worry, I just don't want some loner to come by and scar your pretty face." He hoped she'd take one of the comments he was throwing at her in a good way and respond positively.

Maplefur dug her nose under a paw as another cold shiver swept through her. She sniffled, the cold weather making her feel sick. She probably looked about half her size, all curled up and desperate to remain warm, but she didn't care. She could fight off any predator... maybe... probably not. She was never the strong one. Maybe emotionally, but never physically. She was the smallest of her litter and she had lost every fight she'd been in. It's not fair, she thought to herself, sniffling again. Why couldn't she be like her clan-born Clanmates? She was a pitiful loner with a broken heart, a damaged conscious, and a terrible lack of self-esteem. She wrapped her tail more tightly around her as a cold wind brushed past her.
Maplefur heard the sound of ruffling leaves and pawsteps. Her head shot up in alarm, but relaxed more when she saw it was Kovu... moving closer to her. She was grateful for the company, but wary of his actions. She barely knew him and she knew he had talked to Kobi. Only one talk with Kobi could turn a sensible cat into an assassin. Maplefur deeply hoped Kovu wasn't one of those and she felt something inside her that told her he wasn't. Maplefur glanced back, away from Kovu, but turned back when he spoke. Her fur warmed again and she blinked once, her bright blue eyes staring into his gaze. She opened her mouth to speak, but couldn't think of anything to say. She was definitely not good with toms, she had only been with one. Kobi had always charmed her, without needing any charm from her. She never learned how to.. flirt. Maplefur placed her head on her paws, her back still to Kovu, and finally said, "I-I can take care of myself."

Kovu nodded, "I know you can take care of yourself, but if something happened to you I'd feel awful." He mewed, sounding sweet and innocent. He walked around her and laid infront of her, so he could see her face. Her gorgeous face. "I feel sort of responsible for you. I'm the one who is bringing you out here." The tom pointed out.
Kovu knew he wanted to protect her for more reasons than that one, but he'd never admit it to her unless she did first. As if, Kovu, stop dreaming! He told himself irritably, feeling himself stare into Maplefur's blue eyes. It was hard to pull away, and he didn't want too.

Maplefur watched him with curious eyes as he came around to lay in front of her. The lacking of distance between them made her uncomfortable, not because Kovu was a bad cat or anything. She'd been in the position before, and sleeping too close to a tom made her uncomfortable. On more than once occasion, Kobi would force her to do things she didn't want to do. That's why she always slept close to she-cats in ThunderClan, for fear her past might bump it's way back into her present. She shuddered at the memory, fear flashing in her eyes for a brief moment.
"Why would you feel awful?" she asked, glancing up to look him in the eye. It was a bit unsettling how amazing his eyes were. "You don't even know me. You know Kobi. I can't trust him and I can't afford to trust anyone who knows him. I can't have another broken heart," she said, her eyes brimming with tears. She couldn't even look Kovu in the eye. Her gaze stared at the ground beneath them. "Not when mine is just starting to heal," she added and sniffled.

Kovu's ears flicked back. "No, no! Don't cry." He whispered, flicking away a tear from her cheek with the tip of his brown ringed tail. Crying made him feel sad, and sad was an emotion Kovu didn't enjoy showing off. The tom put his tail under her chin and lifted her gently so that he looked into her eyes. "I wouldn't, I couldn't break your heart." He mewed softly, looking into her eyes the whole time.
Kovu felt an overbearing love for this she-cat who he didn't even know, and it made him mad. How can I bring Maplefur to her death if I love her? No... I can't. But I don't have another option. He fought with himself, a civil war going on in his head. Oh how hard life is!

Don't cry. Strangely, the words made her want to cry more. A few tears escaped her eyes and she sniffled some more. An electric shock like lightning rushed through her when Kovu wiped away a tear. She froze at the contact, unsure of what to do. She looked him in the eyes with his tail underneath her chin. His eyes were so... enchanting. She blinked, completely frozen. His next words made her cry more. They were so touching, and to have his eyes constantly watching her made her definitely self-conscious. She never felt like that around Kobi. With Kobi, she didn't care what she looked like, for he would never love her like she loved him. Like she loves him, she still loves him after all he's done to break her world.
But, there was a sliver of attraction to Kovu. He was so confident that he would never hurt her and Maplefur believed him. Just by looking in his eyes, she could tell he wouldn't lie to her. Her body started to shake and Maplefur backed away from him. She couldn't handle this, too much... contact. She weeped, shaking to the bone. Then, something weird snapped in her and she slowly padded forward. Maplefur cautiously approached him, her wet blue eyes staring into his. She pressed her fur into his and buried her head in his shoulder. "I-I believe you. I'm sorry. You're not... you're not Kobi," she whispered into his fur, glad for the warmth of his body against hers.

Kovu felt torn when she pulled away, and then all at once he felt a million times better as he felt her soft fur push into his own white and brown striped fur. He looked at Maplefur, slightly wondering what he should do. Or rather, what he was allowed to do. "N-no I'm not."
All at once he wanted to tell her what was going on. He wanted to tell her that she had to go along with it so Kovu could kill Kobi first. But now wasn't the time, if there was a time. He licked her ear gently. "You're safe with me." He whispered, his hot breath on her neck.

Eventually, she stopped crying, her once bright eyes bloodshot from the constant tears. Her eyes widened when he licked her and she pulled away to look at him. You're safe with me. She shivered as his breath touched her fur. Maplefur... why are you doing this? You barely know him. The thought confused her and she backed away, wrapping her tail protectively around her paws. She moved her gaze from the ground to Kovu. "I... I know I'm safe. But, I can't do this Kovu. I-I'm not ready," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Maplefur glanced all around. The black night sky, dotted with stars, shone above them. The soft ferns made her even more weary. "I don't think I'll ever be ready," she whispered, not even sure if Kovu could hear her. She blinked, her body hunched over to avoid the cold night air. She just wanted her son, after all these moons of pining for the only cat she craved for. Snatched away at birth, she never even got to see what color his eyes were. She only saw his solid grey pelt, so small and vulnerable. She only saw a glimpse of him, but that one view of him haunted her for moons. "I just want to see him," she said in a whimper, not sure that Kovu even knew who she was referring to her.

I don't think I'll ever be ready. Kovu looked at her, blue eyes understanding and soft. "It's ok, I'm not going to push you to do something you don't want too!" He exclaimed reassuringly, touching his tail-tip to her shoulder. I just want to see him. See who? Obviously not Kobi... Kovu was confused a bit at first, but then nodded slowly. "You will see your son, I promise. I'll take you right to him."
The tom stretched out his paws infront of him and laid down, sprawling out across the long, soft ferns. Their green color seemed to him like his homeland, with rollng green hills dotted with bushes and ferns. Oh, how good it was...

The she-cat's gaze traveled back to Kovu, watching his tail as he touched her shoulder. She moved away from him, dropping her blue eyes to the ground. Now that she wasn't pressed up against him, the wind seemed colder. Maplefur shivered and wrapped her tail tightly around her. Like that's gonna help, she scolded herself. I'll take you to him. She sniffled and nodded, instantly believing him. A thought crossed her mind and she glanced up. "Why? Are you just naturally kind? Anybody who associated with Kobi at some point has some evil in them. I know I do," she mewed, her last words a whisper.
She drew in a breath and glanced back towards him. "How did you meet Kobi anyways?" she asked, narrowing her eyes slightly. She wanted to know, badly, but a part of her screamed at herself to shut up. This would most likely just bring her more pain and sorrow... and confusion. Why'd she still like Kobi, after all he's done to ruin her life and break her down to pieces? I dunno, was her answer in her mind. She was right... she really didn't know. You're such a mess, she thought to herself.
